Short answer

On gas Viking cooktops and rangetops, nearly every repair is ignition (igniters, switches, spark module) or a burner valve. On electric radiant cooktops it is usually an element, its switch or the hot-surface indicator. On induction cooktops it is electronic: a power board, a cooling fan or a sensor, often announced by an error code. Cracked glass on electric and induction tops is replaceable as a part.

Gas rangetops and cooktops

A Viking rangetop is the top of a pro range without the oven: it sits in the counter with its knobs on the front panel, and may include a griddle or char-grill. A Viking gas cooktop drops into a cutout with the knobs on top or on the front edge. Both use sealed gas burners with electronic spark ignition.

What fails

Igniters crack or wear ($220–$380 per burner), burner switches absorb moisture from boil-overs and make every burner click, spark modules wear out ($450–$1,300), and burner valves can stiffen or leak. Griddles have their own burner, igniter and thermostat. Our burner clicking guide walks through the safe checks.

Flames that look wrong

Yellow, lazy or lifting flames usually mean dirty or blocked ports, a misaligned cap, or — after a move or a fuel change — the wrong orifice for your gas type. Natural gas and propane need different orifices; if your house changed fuel, the cooktop must be converted with the correct kit.

Induction quick checks before calling

  • Hold a magnet to the bottom of the pan — if it does not stick firmly, induction will not heat it.
  • Check the pan covers the zone marking; small pans may not be detected.
  • Turn off the control lock (check your manual for the key combination).
  • Make sure nothing blocks the cooling air under the cooktop — drawers packed tight against the underside are a common cause of overheating shut-offs.
  • Write down any code exactly as shown before resetting the breaker.

Questions Viking owners ask us

What is the difference between a Viking rangetop and a cooktop?

A rangetop is a pro-style top with front-mounted knobs that slides into a counter cutout, often with a griddle or char-grill. A cooktop drops into the counter with its controls on top or on the front edge. We repair both.

Why does my Viking induction cooktop keep shutting off?

Common causes are cookware that is not fully magnetic or too small for the zone, overheating because cooling air is blocked, and sensor or fan faults. If it shows a code, note it before resetting.

Can a cracked Viking cooktop glass be replaced?

Yes. The glass top is a replaceable part on electric and induction cooktops. Stop using the cooktop until it is replaced.

How much does Viking cooktop repair cost?

A single gas igniter is typically $220–$380 and a spark module $450–$1,300; induction board and glass repairs cost more. The $89 service call is waived when you approve the repair.
