Gas Vikings and the Bay Area’s gas rules — what actually applies
Owners of gas Viking ranges often ask: “Am I still allowed to repair it?” The short answer is yes. Here is what the local rules really cover.
Bay Area Air District appliance rules
The Bay Area Air Quality Management District’s 2023 rules phase in zero-NOx requirements for gas furnaces and water heaters sold in future years. The District’s own FAQ states that the rules “do not include any requirements for gas stoves,” and that existing appliances do not have to be replaced. Your gas or dual-fuel Viking range, rangetop or cooktop is not affected.
San Francisco’s all-electric ordinances
San Francisco’s 2020 all-electric ordinance applies to new buildings whose permit applications were filed on or after June 1, 2021. The city states it does not affect alterations to existing buildings with gas piping. A 2025 ordinance extends electrification only to major renovations that also replace a whole-building heating or hot-water system. Repairing the gas range you already have is a repair, not new construction.
Who supplies your gas
PG&E supplies gas to most of the Bay Area. Palo Alto is the main exception: the City of Palo Alto Utilities provides both gas and electricity there. Alameda and the city of Santa Clara have city-owned electric utilities, with gas still from PG&E.

Questions Viking owners ask us
Is there a Viking repair technician near me?
If you are anywhere from San Francisco and Marin to San Jose and the Tri-Valley, yes — we send technicians to homes in all six regions listed on this page. Call (650) 800-5431 to check your ZIP code.
Do you charge more for distant cities?
No. The service call is $89 everywhere we work, and it is waived when you approve the repair.
Do you serve Napa, Sonoma or Santa Cruz?
Our regular routes cover the six regions on this page. Call us for addresses outside them — we will tell you honestly whether we can get there in a reasonable time.
Can I still repair my gas Viking range under the new Bay Area rules?
Yes. The Bay Area Air District’s appliance rules cover furnaces and water heaters, not stoves, and San Francisco’s all-electric rules apply to new construction and certain major renovations, not to repairing an existing range.
