Viking authorized service vs independent repair

Many owners search for a “Viking authorized” or “Viking certified” technician without knowing what the label actually changes. The honest answer depends on one thing: whether your appliance is still under Viking’s warranty.

  • $89 service call, waived with repair
  • 365-day labor warranty
  • Genuine Viking parts

The short version

Under warranty? Call Viking first. Repairs in the 2-year full-warranty period are free (in the later, limited years Viking supplies the covered part and you pay the labor), and Viking requires warranty work to be done by its authorized service agencies. Out of warranty? You can choose any qualified repair company. Federal rules do not let a manufacturer make warranty coverage depend on using authorized service for repairs the warranty doesn’t pay for. We are an independent company: we are not part of Viking’s network and we do warranty-expired repairs.

What Viking’s warranty says about other repairers

Viking’s warranty states that warranty service must be performed by a Viking authorized service agency, and that the warranty does not apply to damage resulting from repair service by anyone other than an authorized agency. In practice that means two things: in-warranty repairs go through Viking’s network, and if a non-authorized repair itself causes damage, Viking does not have to cover that damage.

It does not mean that any outside repair cancels your coverage. Under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act rules (16 CFR 700.10(c)), a warrantor may not condition a warranty on using only authorized service or authorized parts for non-warranty service and maintenance. In 2022 the FTC issued orders against Harley-Davidson, Weber and a generator maker over warranty terms that discouraged independent repair, and in 2024 it sent warning letters to eight more companies.

California goes further on parts. Under SB 244, in effect since July 1, 2024, makers of appliances with a wholesale price of $100 or more, first sold in California on or after July 1, 2021, must make parts, tools and documentation available to owners and independent repair shops for seven years after the model was last manufactured.

Questions Viking owners ask us

Will an independent repair void my Viking warranty?

An outside repair does not automatically cancel your warranty, and federal rules bar making coverage depend on authorized service for non-warranty work. But Viking’s warranty excludes damage caused by non-authorized repair, and in-warranty repairs must go through Viking’s network — so if you are under warranty, call Viking first.

Are you a Viking authorized service agency?

No. We are an independent repair company, not affiliated with Viking Range, LLC. We repair Viking appliances that are out of warranty, using genuine Viking parts.

How long is the Viking warranty?

Viking’s current indoor warranty is 2 years full, with limited parts-only coverage on certain components through year 5 and longer coverage on refrigerator sealed systems. Outdoor products have a 1-year full warranty. Check your own warranty document for the exact terms.

Is a Viking “factory service” technician better?

For warranty and recall work, use Viking’s network — recall repairs are free, and so are repairs in the full-warranty period. For out-of-warranty work, what matters is experience with Viking appliances, genuine parts, a clear price before work and a warranty on the repair.
