Viking hood & ventilation repair

A Viking pro range can put out serious heat and smoke, and the hood above it has to keep up. We repair Viking wall-mount, island and insert hoods — weak suction, loud or rattling blowers, lights, switches and controls.

  • $89 service call, waived with repair
  • 365-day labor warranty
  • Genuine Viking parts

Short answer

Most Viking hood problems are one of four things: grease-loaded baffle filters (weak suction), a failing blower motor or capacitor (hum, slow start, noise), a damper or duct problem (whistling, rattling, back-drafts) or a switch, light or control fault. Clean the filters first; if the problem stays, it is a repair.

Five-minute maintenance that fixes many complaints

  1. Switch the hood off at the breakerThe heat sensor can start the blower while you clean, so cut the power first.
  2. Take the baffle filters downThey lift and slide out. Viking’s baffle filters are dishwasher-safe; don’t take them apart. Recirculating hoods also have charcoal filters, replaced every 6–12 months.
  3. Wipe the inside of the hoodGrease builds up around the filter frames and lights. Use a degreaser on a cloth, not sprayed into the electrics.
  4. Run the blower on high for a minuteListen for rattles and feel for strong airflow at the filters.
  5. Look outsideMake sure the exterior wall or roof cap flap opens when the fan runs and is not blocked by leaves or a bird nest.

Ventilation matters more over a pro range

High-output burners, char-grills and griddles produce more heat, grease and combustion by-products than a standard range. California’s energy code sets minimum airflow or capture requirements for kitchen ventilation in new homes, and they are higher over gas ranges than electric. Whatever your home’s age, a hood that works properly keeps grease off the cabinets and the air in the kitchen cleaner.

If your hood has never quite kept up, the cause may be the installation rather than a failed part — a long or undersized duct run, too many elbows, or a missing make-up air path in a tight modern house. We will tell you honestly whether it is a repair or a ductwork question.

Questions Viking owners ask us

How often should I clean my Viking hood filters?

For a household that cooks most days, about once a month; more often if you sear or deep-fry regularly. Grease-loaded filters are the number one cause of weak suction.

Why does my Viking hood hum but not spin?

A hum with little or no movement is a classic sign of a failed motor start capacitor or a motor near the end of its life. Switch it off — running a stalled motor can overheat it.

Can you fix a hood that is too loud?

Often. Loose blower housings, worn bearings and fluttering dampers all add noise and can be fixed. If the noise comes from air moving through a small duct at high speed, the fix is in the ductwork.

What does a hood repair cost?

Filters and lights are minor; blower motor and control repairs typically run a few hundred dollars including the part. The $89 service call is waived when you approve the repair. See repair costs.
