Short answer
A Viking microwave that runs but doesn’t heat usually has a failed magnetron, high-voltage diode or capacitor, or a door switch. One that won’t start often has a door switch, keypad or control fault. A warming drawer that stays cold typically needs a heating element, thermostat or control. Most are single-part repairs.
Microwave problems
| Symptom | Common cause |
|---|---|
| Runs, light and turntable on, food stays cold | Magnetron, high-voltage diode or capacitor, thermal cut-out |
| Nothing happens when you press start | Door switch, keypad (membrane), control board, blown internal fuse |
| Microwave drawer won’t open or close | Drawer motor, gear or track, obstruction, drawer control |
| Sparking inside | Damaged waveguide cover, metal in the cavity, damaged cavity paint |
| Some keys don’t respond | Worn or cracked keypad membrane |
Warming drawer problems
| Symptom | Common cause |
|---|---|
| Drawer stays cold | Heating element, thermostat or thermal fuse, control |
| Too hot, or won’t hold a setting | Thermostat or control |
| Drawer hard to open or misaligned | Debris on the slide rails, worn or bent slides; after removal, bearing retainers not pushed fully forward |
| Indicator light on, no heat | Element or a broken connection |
Quick checks
- Power and breakerA built-in microwave and warming drawer each need power — check the breaker and, if accessible, the outlet.
- Control lock and Demo modeOn the Viking DrawerMicro, Control Lock (held for 3 seconds to switch on or off) makes the keys and even the drawer seem dead, and Demo mode lets it run without heating. Other models have similar settings — check your manual.
- Door or drawer fully closedA microwave will not run if the door switches don’t sense it closed. Look for food or a utensil holding the door or drawer open slightly. On a DrawerMicro, use the OPEN/CLOSE pad — don’t force the drawer by hand.
- Warming drawer settingMake sure the drawer is switched on and set to a temperature, and give it 15–20 minutes to preheat.
Repair or replace a built-in microwave?
Built-in microwaves are fitted into cabinetry or a wall-oven combination with trim kits, so replacement is not as simple as swapping a countertop model — the new unit has to match the opening. That often makes repair the better choice, especially for door switches, keypads, drawer mechanisms and diodes. When the magnetron and control both fail on an older unit, we will price the repair and tell you plainly whether replacement is wiser.
Questions Viking owners ask us
Why does my Viking microwave run but not heat?
The most common causes are a failed magnetron, high-voltage diode or capacitor, or a door switch that lets the light and turntable run but blocks the heating circuit. All are internal high-voltage parts — do not open the unit yourself.
Can you fix a Viking microwave drawer that won’t open?
Yes. Drawer microwaves use a motor, gears and tracks; a jam, a worn gear or a control fault can stop the drawer. Most are repairable without replacing the whole unit.
My warming drawer light is on but it doesn’t warm. What failed?
Usually the heating element or a thermal fuse or thermostat in the heating circuit. These are standard replacement parts.
What does the repair cost?
Door switches, keypads and warming-drawer elements are typically a few hundred dollars including the part; magnetron and control repairs cost more. The $89 service call is waived when you approve the repair. Repair costs.
