Viking model number lookup: where to find it and how to read it

Your Viking’s model and serial number decide which parts fit, whether a recall applies and how old the appliance is. Here is where the tag is on each type of Viking, how to decode the model prefix, and how to read the build date hidden in the serial number.

  • Tag locations from Viking’s own manuals
  • Serial number = build date
  • Check recalls in one minute

Quick answer

On most Viking ranges the rating tag is under the control panel — open the oven door and look up at the frame. On Viking built-in refrigerators it is on the upper interior wall, behind the light. On dishwashers it is on the left side of the tub or door opening. The first letters of the model number tell you the product type, and the first six digits of the serial number are the build date (month, day, year).

Where the model and serial tag is

Locations are quoted or summarized from Viking’s use-and-care manuals. Older models may differ slightly — if you can’t find it, check the manual for your model.

What the model prefix means

Current Viking model numbers start with letters for the product type, then a digit for the series and a number for the width; older models such as VGSC306 or VDB325 follow other patterns. For example, VGR5304 is a 5 Series sealed-burner gas range, 30 inches wide.

Prefixes are taken from the titles in Viking’s own documentation library. A two-letter color code usually ends the model number; “LP” at the end means the unit is set up for propane.

Your serial number is the build date

Viking states that the first six numeric characters of the serial number are the manufacturing date, in month-day-year order. A serial number starting 082421 means the appliance was built on August 24, 2021.

That date matters in three ways. It tells you the appliance’s real age when you are deciding between repair and replacement. It is what Viking uses as the warranty start date if you cannot find proof of purchase. And it is how recall notices identify affected units.

Questions Viking owners ask us

Where is the model number on a Viking range?

On most Viking ranges it is on a rating label under the control panel — open the oven door and look up at the frame. Open-burner (VGIC) ranges have it on the left side wall of the burner box, and Tuscany ranges inside the storage drawer opening.

Where is the serial number on a Viking refrigerator?

On Viking built-in refrigerators and 7 Series columns, on the upper interior wall behind the light. Freestanding French-door models have it on the right wall of the refrigerator section; full-height wine units on the right wall of the bottom zone.

How old is my Viking appliance?

Read the first six digits of the serial number as month, day and year. 082421 = built August 24, 2021.

What does “LP” at the end of a Viking model number mean?

The unit was configured for liquid propane rather than natural gas. Burner orifices differ between the two gases, so the setup must match your supply.

What is the difference between Viking Professional and Designer models?

In Viking’s own recall tables, model numbers starting with V are listed as Professional Series and those starting with D as Designer Series. Parts can differ between the two, so give us the full model number.
