Viking error codes: what your display is telling you
Viking does not use one code list for every appliance — each control family has its own. Below are the codes and light patterns Viking documents in its manuals and service guides, what they point to, and the safe first steps. We left out the “F1–F10” lists that circulate online: they contradict each other and we could not match them to any Viking document.
- Codes from Viking documents only
- Know your model first
- Write the code down before resetting
Before anything else
Write down the exact code or light pattern, your model and serial number, and what the appliance was doing when it appeared. Then check the two settings that make Viking appliances look broken when they are not: Showroom or Demo mode (the display works but nothing heats) and Control Lock (keys don’t respond). If a code returns after a reset, the appliance needs service.
Viking wall oven and range oven codes
Touch-control Viking ovens (DEDO, DESO, VEDO and VESO 127T/130T/527T/530T) show these messages. The oven will not run while one is active.
| Display | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| MODEL ERROR | The control cannot identify the oven model | Reset power once; if it returns, the control or its model connector needs service |
| RTD ERROR | Oven temperature sensor reading out of range — open or shorted sensor or wiring | Service: sensor and wiring test |
| PROBE ERROR | Meat probe circuit fault | Unplug the probe and retry; if it persists, service |
| LATCH ERROR | Door lock did not reach the expected position | Let the oven cool; make sure nothing blocks the door; then service |
| KEYBOARD ERROR | A touch key is stuck or the keypad has failed | Clean the panel and reset; then service |
| HIGH LIMIT ERROR | The oven got hotter than its safety limit | Turn off and let cool; call for service — don’t keep resetting |
| COOLING ERROR | Cooling fan running below its minimum speed | Service: cooling fan |
| RELAY ERROR | A relay on the control is not switching correctly | Service: control board |

Flashing-light codes on older and 3 Series ovens
| Model family | Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 3 Series dual-fuel (RDSCD230) | 2 flashes | Model header fault (checked at power-up) |
| 3 Series dual-fuel (RDSCD230) | 3 flashes | Cooling fan fault |
| 3 Series dual-fuel (RDSCD230) | 4 flashes | High-limit fault |
| Older VESO / VEDO electric wall ovens | Cycle and Clean lights flashing in set patterns | Latch, sensor (RTD), model or high-limit fault — the pattern is decoded with the service manual |

Viking refrigerator and wine alarms
| What you see | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| “oPn” or “Shr” (5 Series built-in, e.g. VCBB5363E) | A temperature sensor reads open (oPn) or shorted (Shr) | Service: sensor and wiring |
| Temperature lights scrolling, alarm sounding (older built-ins) | Thermistor (sensor) alarm | Press Alarm Off; if it keeps sounding, call a technician |
| High-temperature alarm (built-ins such as VCSB) | A section has stayed too warm for about two hours | Check the door and condenser; see not cooling |
| Door alarm | Door open more than about three minutes | Close the door; check for items blocking it and for a torn gasket |
| Wine cellar high-temperature alarm | A zone has drifted about 5°F from its set point (when the alarm is enabled) | Check the door seal and front grille; see wine cooler repair |
Viking dishwasher codes
Two families are documented. On 3 and 5 Series dishwashers the code shows on the display. On older 450 Series models it flashes on the Pots/Pans and Normal Wash lights — count the Pots/Pans flashes, then the Normal Wash flashes.
| Code | Meaning | First check |
|---|---|---|
| E:01 (3 & 5 Series) | Overflow or leak detected — the dishwasher pumps out | If E:01 stays on, it is a fault that needs service |
| E:02 (3 & 5 Series) | No water — supply cut off or valve closed | Open the supply valve under the sink; check for a kinked line |
| 1–5 (450 Series) | Drain error | Clogged filters or disposal, kinked hose, disposal knockout plug, no high loop |
| 2–2 (450 Series) | Fill timeout | Water off, kinked fill line, low pressure, unit not level |
| 1–1 (450 Series) | Flood sensor disconnected | Service |
| 1–2, 1–3, 3–1 (450 Series) | Motor control status or communication fault | Reset; then service |
| 1–4 (450 Series) | Diverter timeout | Service |
| 2–3, 2–4, 2–5 (450 Series) | Water level sensor faults | Check filters and level; then service |
| Both lights flashing continuously (450 Series) | Water in the base pan (flood) | Turn off and close the water supply; service |
| All lights except Start flashing (450 Series) | Power was interrupted | Hold Start for 4 seconds to reset |

Not errors — but they look like one
- Showroom / Demo modeThe display and lights work but the oven elements or the microwave don’t heat. Turn it off in the settings menu.
- Control LockKeys don’t respond — and on the DrawerMicro, the drawer won’t open. Hold the lock key for about 3 seconds.
- Sabbath modeThe oven runs with limited controls and no beeps. Check the settings menu.
- Hood blower starts by itselfViking hoods have a heat sensor that starts the blower when it senses heat.
- “COOLDOWN” after self-cleanThe door stays locked until the oven cools.
- Griddle “ON” light stays litNormal until the griddle reaches temperature.
Questions Viking owners ask us
How do I reset a Viking error code?
Switching the appliance off at its breaker for a minute clears many control faults. On 450 Series dishwashers, hold Start for 4 seconds. If the same code comes back, the fault is real and resetting again won’t fix it — and a HIGH LIMIT error should not be reset repeatedly.
What does RTD error mean on a Viking oven?
The oven temperature sensor (RTD) is reading out of range — usually a failed sensor or a damaged wire or connector. The oven won’t heat until it is fixed. Sensor repairs are among the most common Viking oven repairs.
What does E:01 mean on a Viking dishwasher?
On 3 and 5 Series Viking dishwashers, E:01 means the machine detected an overflow or leak and pumped out. If the code stays on, turn off the dishwasher and its water supply and book a repair.
What do F-codes mean on my Viking?
We could not match the F-code lists published online to any Viking document, and those lists contradict each other. Write down the exact code and your model number and call us — the model identifies the control, which tells us what the code really means.
